Gesche is a social scientist and human geographer. She studied at the Universities of Kiel and Greifswald (Germany) and received her PhD in philosophy from Stockholm University (Sweden). Alongside to several years of experience in various private sector companies, she conducted extensive long-term social science research in Brazil’s Amazon region and Indonesia’s Spermonde Archipelago.
Since joining AWI in 2013, her research has focused on knowledge transfer processes, their evaluation and the interactions between science and stakeholders in marine resource systems. She also examines the broader impact of science on societal processes. Another key area of her work is the analysis of social-ecological systems and the socio-economic effects of human activities on marine environments, particularly in the context of marine food production.
Lena is a social-ecological systems thinker with a particular interest in applying inter- and transdisciplinary approaches at the science-society interface. Her work is motivated by the urgent need to co-produce actionable knowledge for tackling today’s sustainability challenges. Lena has a background in Environmental Science (B.Sc.) and Tropical Marine Ecology (M.Sc.). In her PhD, she focused on generating systems and transformative knowledge to enhance the resilience of coastal social-ecological systems to climate change. Lena is interested in the of various methods, including fuzzy cognitive mapping, as well as stakeholder analysis, social network analysis and leverage points analysis.
In her current project PrimePrevention, Lena further develops these methods to contribute to better-informed decision-making with regards to biological hazards in the Baltic Sea.
Christina a marine biologist and is dedicated to the co-production and transfer of knowledge at the science-society and economy interface. Her particular interest lies in the realm of sustainable aquatic food systems and building resilience in coastal communities by adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change. With a background in Marine Biology from Universität Bremen (Germany), Universiteit Gent (Belgium) and Universidad the Oviedo (Spain), her previous work and PhD have focused on sustainable aquaculture based on innovative fish feeds and assessing the role of knowledge and perception of aquaculture production to initiate transformative change in European aquaculture.
In her current research, she further develops the iterative and reflexive evaluation of factors and processes for successful co-production and transfer of knowledge transdisciplinary research in a living lab setting for the prediction of marine biological hazards.
