Overview

The central main focus of the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven is polar research and the exploration of the sea. Scientists of different disciplines work together multidisciplinary to investigate the climate, biosystems and geosystems in order to better understand the complete system of our planet.

More than 1200 employees work at different locations in Bremerhaven. The AWI campus encloses six complexes of buildings and various other single buildings are distributed over the city.

Arrival by train

Trains of the Deutschen Bahn and the Elbe Weser railways (EVB) operate at regular intervals from Bremen and Hamburg to Bremerhaven.

To AWI Campus (buildings A, B, C und E) and the Technikum and buildings G & H in Klußmannstraße:
From the central station of Bremerhaven you can take several bus routes:
- bus route 501 up to „Weserfähre“
- bus routes 505, 506 up to „Columbusstraße/Weserfähre“
- bus routes 440, 503, 507, 528, 531, 579 up to „Elbinger Platz“
From here it is a walk of 10-15 minutes. The map on the left shows you the way from the stops „Weserfähre“ and „Columbusstraße/Weserfähre“, the right one from „Elbinger Platz“. You can reach the AWI Campus Bussestraße (building F) at the turning to the Weser ferry in the Bussestraße on the right sight. Take off at "Elbinger Platz" and go to the Kaistraße to reach building G in the Klußmannstraße.

Additionally the bus route 510 goes directly from the central station up to „Doppelschleuse/AWI“, but just a few times per day. You can find the exactly timetable on the Website of VBN.

To Wegener-House (Building D):
To get to the Wegener-house of the AWI, you can take the bus routes 502, 505, 506, 508 and 509 from the central station and get off at the stop "Hochschule Bremerhaven". From there cross the "Theodor Heuss Platz" and go to the "Linzer Straße" and after a few minutes walking you reach the Wegener-House (see left map, the way from "Linzer Straße" is marked).

Alternatively you can drive by the bus 501 up to the stop "Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum" which holds directly in the parking bay before the Wegener-House (see right map). However this bus runs seldom. You can check the schedule with VBN.

Arrival by car

You reach Bremerhaven by car via the federal motorway A 27 which leads from Bremen to Bremerhaven. Taking the exit "Bremerhaven Mitte" you can reach the central locations of the Alfred Wegener Institute.

Arrival by car
Bremerhaven can be reached by car via the autobahn A27 which leads from Bremen to Bremerhaven. If you are coming from the exit Bremerhaven-Mitte continue straight on the Grimsbystraße through the underpass. At the crossroads to the Hafenstraße continue straight on the Lloydstraße. At the end of Lloydstraße turn right onto Barkhausenstraße. Follow this road until the road makes a sharp right turn. At the next light turn right into the Bürgermeister-Smidt-Straße. The guesthouse is the second building on the left.

Arrival by train / bus
Take the bus 505 or 506 (both to Debstedt) from the mainstation. Get off at the stop Rotersand, go back to the crossroads and turn left into the Bürgermeister-Smidt Straße. The guest house is the second building on the left.
