Methodology

As is usual in the social sciences, we apply a constructivist lens to understand how decision-making and governance of marine social-ecological systems is shaped by different actors. This means rather than quantitatively measuring objective phenomena, we focus on the subjective interpretations and social constructs created by those actors. In this context, we seek to understand how different actors - such as government bodies, local communities, private enterprises, and environmental organizations - perceive and interpret marine issues, and how these perceptions influence their actions and interactions.

By examining the narratives, interests and values of individual actors as well as the way they interact (e.g., information flow, collaboration, power dynamics), we aim to uncover the underlying social processes that shape governance and decision making. This allows us to understand the complexity and diversity of perspectives within marine social-ecological systems, and to identify potential pathways for more effective and adaptive management practices. This is often followed by concrete recommendations for action, such as through policy briefs, or fact sheets.

To achieve this, we employ a range of qualitative and quantitative methods. These include participatory approaches such as systems mapping or world cafés to visualise and analyse the components and interactions within complex systems. Additionally, we employ content and social network analysis to understand different actors based on their resources, interests, and perceptions. We utilise workshops, focus groups, interviews and questionnaires as means for data collection. Additionally, we assess and evaluate inter- and transdisciplinary research processes to enhance the integration of research into societal and policy frameworks, thereby increasing its overall societal impact.
