Synoptic Observations
The synoptic observations are carried out routinely every three hours. They include measurements and visual observations. The data are 10-minute averages (wind) or instantaneous observations at the given time in UTC.
During night time – when the weather observer is not on duty - the 3-hourly meteorological observations are performed automatically. Thus, no visual observations are available.
All data are generally coded according the definitions of the Word Meteorological Organization WMO. On board of Polarstern the weather observations are coded according to the FM12/13 code and transferred without delay into the Global Telecommunication System GTS were they contribute for the world wide weather forecasts.
All synoptic observations are archived in PANGAEA which offers an interactive access. For further information please contact Gert König-Langlo.
