WG Coastal Geosciences

Our research group is concerned with interdisciplinary, geoscientific questions that deal with the key components of coastal landscapes and ecosystems. Our regional focus are the sedimentary systems of the Wadden Sea and the coastal North Sea. We investigate geomorphological and sedimentary processes, biogeochemical exchange, the role of vegetation, and the interplay of these different aspects for the evolution of landscapes at the interface between land and sea. We consider the whole spectrum of coastal environments, from supratidal salt marshes to subtidal seafloor habitats. Besides the investigation of natural dynamics, this includes the consideration of anthropogenic influences, requirements, and stressors.
