The Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Marine and Polar Research (AWI), is delighted to announce the start of the last cohort of the NF-POGO Centre of Excellence at AWI, a comprehensive oceanographic training programme on the North Sea Islands of Helgoland and Sylt. The new participants from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, India, Madagascar, Tanzania, Somalia, Lebanon, Portugal, Brazil and Argentina will be the last cohort before the ten-year programme rotates to another hosting institution.
“After nine inspiring years we see the careers of over 90 top class scientists, taking shape on the world stage,” comments Prof. Karen Wiltshire, Head of the NF-POGO Centre of Excellence. She states: “This programme equips aspiring oceanographers and marine scientists with the necessary skills and knowledge to address the great challenges and opportunities presented by our planet's oceans.”
Under the guidance of leading experts in the field, the participants will engage in hands-on training, cutting-edge research projects, and interactive learning sessions. The programme covers a wide range of oceanographic disciplines, including physical, chemical, biological, and geological aspects, providing a holistic understanding of ocean systems. The participants are granted a full scholarship enabling excellent scientists from all over the world to join the training. One of the first activities will be a four-day shipboard training on board the research vessel Heincke.
“We are thrilled to conduct this training now in the tenth year on Helgoland and Sylt,” says Dr Eva- Maria Brodte, scientific coordinator of the Centre of Excellence. "These locations offer unparalleled access to diverse marine environments and equipment, enabling participants to observe and study a rich array of marine species and ecosystems.“
The training programme includes both theoretical and practical components, enabling participants to gain a comprehensive understanding of oceanographic research methodologies and techniques. Through fieldwork, laboratory experiments, data analyses, and interdisciplinary projects, the attendees develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills, which are essential tools for a successful career in oceanography.
