A book for all those who want to address the challenges of climate change and contribute to the necessary solutions is now freely available from SpringerBriefs in Climate Studies. Students interviewed leading climate scientists about what motivates and inspires them and how exciting and inspiring working in this field can be. The book offers a look behind the scenes and provides personal insights into how complex and frustrating climate science can be.
A team of students from various scientific disciplines with a common interest in climate research developed an exciting overview of current climate research. A scientific seminar organised by the German National Academic Foundation provided the opportunity to interview leading climate researchers from various disciplines such as meteorology, theoretical physics, palaeoclimatology and oceanography. Prof. Dr Gerrit Lohmann, climate researcher at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), led the programme. He is the main author of the book “Conversations on Climate: The People Behind the Science”, which is now published in the book series SpringerBriefs in Climate Studies. The individual chapters are available to download free of charge under CC licence.
The book provides information on the most important findings of renowned climate scientists, their opinions on current challenges and what they expect from their field in the future. It also includes personal reflections, motivations and future aspirations of various researchers and explains how they have experienced the development of climate science in recent decades. In this way, these interviews can also serve as inspiration for students who are considering dedicating their professional lives to climate science. The interviews show how many different paths can lead to climate research and what questions still need to be answered.
