International cooperation in Antarctica
The AWI has joined forces with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) to share an ice-capable vessel that will resupply three Antarctic research stations for the next ten years. The Silver Mary will visit the Neumayer-Station III every other season, along with Norway’s Troll station and British Halley VI station The partnership builds on the successful UK-German partnership in 2023 and 2024. SPD parliamentary group visits the AWI
The SPD parliamentary group of the Bremen City Parliament visited the AWI in Bremerhaven. AWI Administrative Director Karsten Wurr welcomed the group and introduced the AWI as a research institute. The politicians were then given a tour of the AWI Technical Center, and Dr. Karsten Wurr and Dr. Uwe Nixdorf answered the guests' questions.
Shift change – a day with new perspectives!
The annual "shift change" offers employees the opportunity to swap their workplace for a day and gain new insights into different working environments. The AWI also took part and swapped workplaces with Elbe-Weser-Welten (EWW). The exchange helps to break down barriers and enables inspiring encounters that strengthen the cooperation.
Dr Hans Riegel Award 2025
This year, HIGHSEA students achieved outstanding success in the Dr. Hans Riegel Award competition at the University of Bremen. With support from Astrid Cornils and Alex Kraberg, one team earned 3rd place in the Biology category, while in Geography two groups led by Maria Hörhold and Sebastian Mieruch secured 2nd and 1st place. The projects ranged from microscopy comparisons and simulations of melt layers to the analysis of climate-related data from the Aloha Station in Hawaii. Congratulations to everyone!
ECORD Award for Karsten Gohl
At the recent meeting of the ECORD (European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling) Council in Edinburgh on 4 November 2025, Karsten Gohl was one of two recipients of the ECORD Award. The prize honours his commitment and professional contributions during his time as Chair of the ECORD Facility Board.
Ernst von Rebeur-Paschwitz Prize
At the 85th Annual Meeting of the German Geophysical Society (DGG), Vera Schlindwein, geophysicist and section head at the AWI, was awarded the Ernst von Rebeur-Paschwitz Prize. The DGG has been awarding this prize since 2004 to recognise outstanding scientific achievements.
Five AWI researchers among Clarivate's most-cited researchers
Five AWI researchers have once again been recognised as Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate in 2025: Hans Otto Pörtner, Guido Grosse, Sebastian Primpke, Gunnar Gerdts and Murat Eren. Their work is among the most cited publications worldwide, making a significant contribution to the advancement of their respective fields.
Special honour for former AWI Director Antje Boetius
Antje Boetius has received an exceptional honour for her outstanding contributions to marine research and her commitment to protecting the oceans: She was elected into the Order Pour le mérite. The order is an association of artists and scholars with 73 members currently, including 17 Nobel Prize winners. Marine biologist Boetius was director of the AWI until spring of 2025. The formal entry ceremony into the order will take place on 31 May in Berlin. Mehr information.
EGU Weertman Medal 2026 goes to Olaf Eisen
The European Geosciences Union (EGU) will honour AWI glaciologist Olaf Eisen with the Julia and Johannes Weertman Medal in 2026. A total of 52 people will be honoured for their important contributions to the Earth, planetary and space sciences. They will be celebrated during the EGU General Assembly 2026, which will take place from 3 to 8 May 2026. To the announcement
New overwintering team is ready to go
In a few days, the nine-member wintering team at Neumayer Station III will begin their journey to Antarctica, where they will start work at one of the world's most remote workplaces. Richard Pozgaj, Annika Pia Salveter, Matthias Hahn, Martin Maier, Isabella Hrabe de Angelis, Lasse Urban (back row, from left to right) and Gina Valerie Schulz, Lea Buse and Ingo Gerstmann (front row, from left to right) will work and live at the station for about a year.
