The Polar Portal
The project "The Polar Portal" allows the public to experience the sounds of the deep ocean. Scientists use these sounds to learn more about marine ecosystems, especially in the context of changes to marine habitats caused by climate change. As part of the project, 102 compositions were created by artists from over 30 countries, based on 50 different sound clips from the Arctic and Antarctic oceans. These clips include sounds from various whales and seals, collapsing ice floes and ship noise, among others, and were creatively interpreted by the artists. The results will be on display at the Klimahaus Bremerhaven for a total of three months from 10 April.
The project is led by the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity at the University of Oldenburg (HIFMB) and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and was developed in collaboration with the Ocean Acoustics Lab at the AWI and the University of Oldenburg's Electronics Workshop (UOL).
