Tilapia and Shrimp integrated culture in RAS

Supported by the Egyptian Ministry of Science and Technology, Associate Professor and visiting Scientist Prof. Dr. Zaki Sharawy is investigating the integration of tropical shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei and all male red Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus within the high-temperature recirculating aquaculture systems at the Centre for Aquaculture Research. 

In addition to following the performance of both species in co-culture, Prof. Sharawy will be determining the solid nutrient flows between culture units and species and determining optimal co-culture forms (direct vs indirect co-culture).

The integration of additional species, in particular tropical sea cucumbers and warm-water halophytes is planned for the remainder of the project.
