Integration of the narrow-clawed crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus) into an operating pike-perch aquaculture system as a more sustainable and resource-efficient option for commercial aquaculture.
The aim of this project is to develop a commercial polycultural aquaculture system with pike-perch (Sander lucioperca) and the narrow-clawed crayfish (Astacus leptodactylus). In Scandinavian countries and Eastern Europe the narrow-clawed crayfish is a delicacy, whereas the species is largely unknown in Germany as yet. In general crayfish are gaining ever greater popularity and could be marketed as a high-priced by-product along with the pike-perch.
By introducing the narrow-clawed crayfish into the aquaculture of pike-perch, we want to benefit more from the resources provided und achieve increased production and cost efficiency. We focus on an innovative tank design and the coordination of water parameters and living conditions, to ensure stress-free coexistence of both species and sustainable culture and production.
