Spitsbergen 2023

The field campaign took place in July and August 2023 in and around Ny-Ålesund in northwestern Spitsbergen. We had two main goals: Firstly, we maintained the Bayelva permafrost observatory where multiple air, snow, soil, and permafrost parameters have been measured since 1998. And secondly, we measured elevations using a high-accuracy GPS antenna to estimate surface subsidence resulting from thawing permafrost. In addition, we visited research sites of local and international partners and discussed scientific results and ideas. The 360° images show our field work at the study sites, the environment of the Bayelva basin close to Ny-Ålesund, and patterned ground landscapes at Kvadehuksletta at the tip of the Brøgger peninsula.
