The target beneficiaries are 25 future ocean experts. The programme will focus on training postgraduate students (Masters or PhD) in marine-related science and technology.
For trainees (20 berths): we aim for young scientists (Master's or PhDs) with little or no experience in seagoing expeditions.
For junior teachers (5 berths): we aim for young scientists (Master's or PhDs) with experience in seagoing expeditions who are also committed to teaching.
Applications will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Educational background, motivation for participating in the programme, commitment to building capacity in the home country, especially to teaching and outreach activities and ability to communicate in English.
5 berths will be assigned for junior teachers.
5 berths will be assigned for participants with an affiliation from a member institution of @seanetwork, according to current list on their website.
5 berths will be assigned for applicants with an affiliation from an Irish institution and climate topic.
Applications will be reviewed by an international panel of ocean scientists. The selection process will be based on the objective of gender and regional balance. Diversity of gender, ethnicity and scientific background will be encouraged to promote cultural exchange and understanding. Emphasis will be given to students from countries with low national income.
A good command of the English language is mandatory.
You have to pass several medical examinations. For this, you will need to provide several results. Among them are:
Questionnaire, consisting of anamnesis (to be filled by the participating person) and physical examination (to be filled by the examining doctor, pages 11-14, bottom)
- blood group pass
- vaccine passport
- the laboratory examination of blood and urine
- ECG examination
- spirometry
- presentation of a brief dentist report (routine control), no longer ago than 3 months.
You also have to comply with the AWI’s Code of Conduct and COVID policy.

We run a multidisciplinary approach and we are aiming for a good balance between the fields of interests of the scholars.
Yes, a marine or climate science related topic is mandatory.
The grant covers travel costs from home airport to the departure port Bremerhaven/Germany and back from the arrival port in Walvis Bay/Namibia to home airport; accommodation during workshop (two - three nights depending on the flight schedule) and upon arrival in Namibia (one night depending on the flight schedule); all meals, accommodation as well as insurance during shiptime.
Not included are all visa-related costs, insurance on land, travel to/from home airport, fees for mandatory medical exams, pocket money etc.
The departure port wil be Bremerhaven (Germany). The arrival port will be Walvis Bay (Namibia).
The scholars will learn to sample in a professional environment and conduct deep cast with the CTD and a water rosette and XBt, as well as en-route sampling. The samples will be processed with an emphasis on nutrients, salinity, micro plastics and molecular methods. En-route methods will be micro plastic sampling, water vapour sampling, XBt data. The scholars will be involved in outreach activities.
The scholars will have an all-day training 26 days on board. In the evening there will be daily meetings with talks and presentations. When sampling events take place during night time, night shifts are requested. At the end of the cruise each scholar will contribute to the cruise report by writing small projects.
Junior teachers will attend and contribute to all regular modules and receive additional teaching training units. Furthermore, they will take on further responsibilities and teaching.
We expect all scholars to actively engage in outreach activities which will be presented by the faculty members and discussed.
Depending on the availability of teachers the following modules are presumably offered:
Oceanography/Microplastics, Atmosphere and Climate, Marine business applications, Molecular Ecology, Bathymetry.
No, the training and sampling units are set and prepared.
A CV in English is mandatory.
No, for the first review round you can upload then as they are.
