Today, EU-PolarNet is presenting urgent polar issues in the European Parliament in Brussels. During a two-hour long policy briefing themed “At the frontline of climate change: Key changes in the Polar Regions that call for European action” the AWI coordinated and EU funded project outlines its five polar white papers.
These white papers address societal relevant research questions concerning the Arctic and Antarctic. The aim of the event is to increase policy makers’ awareness on the far-reaching effects of climate-induced changes in the polar regions. AWI director and EU-PolarNet coordinator Prof Dr Antje Boetius sets the scene in her keynote on major changes in the Arctic and Antarctic. Subsequently she leads the discussions of a stakeholder panel on how European polar research and climate policies can contribute to the protection and sustainable development of the polar regions. Host of the event is Christel Schaldemose, Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the “Polar Regions” working group of the EP Intergroup on “Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development”.
