How communicate researchers their scientific knowledge? And how is it carried to policy makers? These were two of the questions that were discussed in one of the "Arctic Discussion Series" in Potsdam.
On June 29, 2015 another event of the "Arctic Discussion Series" took place in Potsdam on Telegrafenberg. The series is jointly organizing by the Embassy of Canada, the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, the Ecologic Institute, the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) and the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI).
The organizers Margarete Pauls (AWI) and Dr. Volker Rachold (IASC) welcomed the speakers and the audience. The moderator was Prof. Bernhard Diekmann (Head of AWI Research Unit Potsdam) and the speakers were Dr. Lars-Otto Reiersen (Executive Secretary, Arctic Monitoring and Assessment program of the Arctic Council), MinDirig Wilfried Kraus (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) and Josefine Lenz (IASC Fellow, AWI).
The presentations by Lars-Otto Reiersen and Wilfried Kraus showed examples of how researchers communicate their scientific knowledge and how it is carried to policy makers. Lars-Otto Reiersen described the work of AMAP for the Arctic Council, Wilfried Kraus the transfer of research results in the area between excellence, relevance and participation and support of this approach by research policy. Josefine Lenz commented from her perspective as an early career scientist and formulated important questions that were addressed also in the ensuing lively discussion with the audience.
