Sustainable Marine Bioeconomy

Closing the circle: Bio-based solutions  - Sustainable Marine Bioeconomy AWI

Resource use by humans today is not sustainable and must change. As Sustainable Marine Bioeconomy at AWI we explore pathways to sustainable resource use. We integrate understanding of the natural earth system with technological innovation to move towards a sustainable circular economy new products and value chains.

We generate impact by use of aquatic organisms for bio-based economy:

  • We conduct in-depth research into the 3D design and structure-based performance of marine organisms (diatoms, radiolarians, corals and sponges) and develop sustainable products (lightweight solutions) and software using bio-inspired principles to create sustainable products and buildings. Our goal is to maximise our impact by improving resource efficiency and functionality while reducing CO2 emissions. We disseminate our results widely through a network of members from the automotive, aerospace, civil and mechanical engineering industries, as well as the software platform of our start-up Synera GmbH.

  • We investigate aquatic organisms for aquaculture in a changing world. We test new production systems, new species combinations and new feeds to produce food in water in a sustainable way. We work with species ranging from unicellular algae all the way up to large fish, covering every aspect to reach full circularity. Our partners come from industry, academia and stakeholder groups across the globe
