Fresh water under the sea - a potential source of the future?

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Wadden Sea Station on Sylt, an interesting series of lectures has been organised to provide you with exciting information about the site and our work on the island.

Almost 99% of the world's liquid freshwater is found in the ground as groundwater. In many parts of the world, groundwater is the only source of clean drinking water. Coastal areas in particular, which are home to almost 40% of the global population, have a considerable demand for fresh water. At the same time, groundwater resources in these regions are particularly endangered by saltwater intrusion and rising sea levels and face the threat of overexploitation. An international research team is currently investigating whether offshore groundwater in arid coastal areas could be used as a potential source of drinking water in the future. Gain insights into fascinating underwater worlds and potential future freshwater resources.
