The branch Scientific Computing of AWI's computing center focuses on different topics of high performance computing, related data handling, and data assimilation. In collaboration with research groups from the research divisions of AWI, we work at the interface of algorithmic developments and real applications. The two groups of the branch provide support for high-performance computing, data processing and data assimilation.

 

Data Assimilation

In the field of data assimilation our work focuses on ensemble-based methods, in particular ensemble Kalman filters and particle filters. The group develops the Parallel Data Assimilation Framework PDAF and provides support for data assimilation. We further perform research on new nonlinear data assimilation algorithms. These methods are implemented in PDAF further studying and application. We also use PDAF in different research projects to apply data assimilation with realistic models, for example to improve coupled climate modeling, ocean prediction, or ocean biogeochemistry.

BremHLR

The branch Scientific Computing coordinates the Bremen Supercomputing Competence Center - BremHLR. As a coorperation of AWI, University of Bremen, Constructor University Bremen, and the Universities of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven and Bremen, supported by the “Bremer Senatorin für Umwelt, Klima und Wissenschaft”, we provide supercomputing consulting for users in the state of Bremen.

High-Performance Computing and Data processing

We support the ever growing avctivities in earth system modelling by giving support in the field of high performance computing (HPC). In particular for numerical model development we operate together with the SYSTEMS branch local high performace computers for all research groups at AWI, and we provide consulting in the use of high-performance resources (DKRZ, BremHLR, JSC).

As an ocean model "in a nut-shell" the Tsunami simulation code TsunAWI serves as testbed for new implementation technolgies and optimization approaches. TsunAWI is used operationally in the Tsunami Early Warning System in Indonesia and, at the same time, is used in scientific projects.

AWI beteiligt sich an der Nationalen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur der Erdsystemforschung NFDI4Earth.

Helmholtz Inkubator für Informations- und Datenwissenschaften

AWI engages in Helmholtz Incubator for Information and Data Science within the Data Science Schools MarDATA (Bremerhaven/Kiel) and HEIBRIDS (Potsdam/Berlin), and Platforms HIFIS, HMC and the Information and Data Science Academy HIDA.
